Discover Cerro Chucanti
Rising 1,439 meters (4,721 feet) above sea level, Cerro Chucanti is the highest peak in Eastern Panama and the tallest mountain in the Maje Range. The Chucanti Nature Reserve protects one of the last isolated cloud forests in eastern Panama, home to numerous endemic plant and animal species, several of which have only recently been discovered. The challenging hike rewards visitors with spectacular mountain scenery.
How to Get There: Approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes from Panama City to Alto Chucanti in Chepo District. Entry is by advance reservation through the reserve administration.
Cost: Access is available through authorized guided tours with friendly rates.
Explore Bayano Lake by Boat
Created in 1976 following the construction of the Ascanio Villalaz Hydroelectric Dam, Bayano Lake is Panama’s largest artificial lake. Surrounded by tropical rainforest, it is a popular destination for boat tours, kayaking, sport fishing and excursions to the famous Bayano Caves.
How to Get There: About 2 hours from Panama City via the Pan-American Highway.
Cost: Lake access is free. Boat tours and cave excursions have variable prices depending on the operator.
Swim in the Utive River
Located in the community of Utive, this popular natural swimming area features crystal-clear waters and natural pools surrounded by tropical vegetation, making it a favorite weekend destination for local families.
How to Get There: Around 45 minutes from Panama City via the Pan-American Highway.
Cost: Access is generally free, although some privately managed areas may charge a small maintenance fee.
Visit the Madroño Viewpoint
Located in the community of El Madroño, Chepo District, this natural viewpoint offers sweeping views of the surrounding mountains, valleys and rural landscapes. The route is also popular among mountain bikers and four-wheel-drive enthusiasts and provides one of the best scenic drives in the region.
How to Get There: Approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes from Panama City via Las Margaritas, following the road toward Madroño.
